Touching Lives - Spring 2004
Stained Glass Commemorative Project at Lakeland Regional Cancer Center
Five
years ago, Karen Mamel, a registered nurse and mother of two in Tampa, was
diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent bilateral mastectomies. Before her
surgery, she met Marilyn Fowlie a registered nurse and a talented stained glass
artist. The colors and shapes in the glass panels Marilyn created intrigued
Karen, a longtime basket weaver.
After
the surgery, Marilyn stopped in to help with Karen’s dressing changes and thus
began an exchange – Marilyn taught Karen the art of glass cutting, selection and
placement while Karen taught Marilyn how to do basketry and weaving.
Last year, Karen, Marilyn and Linda Nord, another registered nurse friend,
created a work commemorating breast cancer patients. Their work, "Flowers of
Hope,” is a four-panel window located in the Chemotherapy area at the Cancer
Center. The window features squares of glass with beautiful flowers centered on
the familiar pink breast cancer ribbon.
Karen
says, "From an artist’s point of view, the spectrum of color is therapeutic and
endless as the light changes throughout the day. This visual expression of hope
and anticipation are what we hope for in the fight against breast cancer.”
"Flowers of Hope,” a wonderful opportunity to commemorate/honor the life of
another with a stained glass flower, is available to you for a gift of $250 to
the Lakeland Regional Cancer Center. A plaque will be placed in the Cancer
Center to recognize the commemorated individuals.
You
can share the hope we all have for a cancer cure while being a part of the care
and hope of current cancer patients at LRCC.
